I started writing poems when I was about 14 or 15 years old. In the beginning, my poems were mostly a way of poking fun at the events around me or criticizing some of the school functions that seemed to be organized merely for show or to check a box on the school calendar. Over time, however, my writing began to change. I started reading the works of established Hindi poets such as Maithili Sharan Gupta, Nirala, Pant, Suman, and others, and their poetry gradually influenced the way I looked at words, emotions, and life. At the same time, adolescence was beginning to make its own contribution. Perhaps inevitably, my poems started finding their way toward beauty, attraction, and the emotions that come with growing up.
I could see two sides of my personality, the young which is attracted to beauty within and looking for one who can share the feelings and the second side, a rebel against society, against the limits. Just like on the image on the top of this page – there are 2 small poems, with 2 opposite sentiments:
I do not claim that what I write is poetry.
It is simply a stream of words, flowing freely.
I chose this path to express my thoughts,
like an innocent bird spreading its wings, dreaming of touching the sun.
I wish to move ahead, leaving Pant, Gupta, and Nirala behind, To create beautiful poems and make a name for myself.
